Lakeside director, Dr. Justin Friebel, and the team take the time getting to know each of their patients and the issues affecting their eye health - creating a realistic treatment plan, and building a relationship of trust and confidence to ensure they approach surgery knowing they are in the best hands.
Lakeside offices in Albert Road, South Melbourne are easily accessible via car, bike/pedestrian paths and tram (with connecting trains from Melbourne).

Director Justin Friebel

Justin is a specialist ophthalmologist and subspecialist in oculoplastic surgery (eye and eyelid surgeon). He is experienced and successful in helping patients achieve optimal eye health and restored vision through a range of effective procedures. Justin also specialises in cosmetic corrections of the upper and lower eyelids, achieving natural aesthetic results with a focus on maintaining health and function of the eyes.
After completing specialist ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne in 2003, Justin spent four years training in the United Kingdom and Canada, gaining further experience in oculoplastic surgery. Since then, Justin has built a strong reputation as a specialist in his field, helping patients enjoy improved vision and healthy, functional eyes.
Dr Jonathan Hyer

Jonathan is a specialist ophthalmologist and subspecialist in oculoplastic and cataract surgery.
At Lakeside, he treats blepharoplasty (eyelid reduction), ptosis, entropion and ectropion, tear duct conditions, eyelid skin lesions, orbital conditions and cataracts.
After seven years of specialist training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London - one of the world's leading eye hospitals - Jonathan completed advanced fellowships in oculoplastic surgery in London and here in Melbourne at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital.
He is experienced and successful in helping patients achieve optimal eye health through a range of surgical and reconstructive procedures, with particular expertise in the eyelids, tear ducts and area surrounding the eye.
In addition to consulting here at Lakeside, Jonathan also consults at both the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and The Alfred Hospital - where he manages complex cataract, eyelid and orbital cases.
He brings a calm, considered approach to his consultations, with a particular focus on natural results that maintain the health and function of the eyes.
Jonathan consults at Lakeside fortnightly on Thursdays.
Dr Bryan Matthews

Bryan is a specialist ophthalmologist and subspecialist in medical and surgical retina (vitreoretinal surgery).
He is experienced and successful in helping patients manage complex conditions affecting the retina and vitreous, working closely with the Lakeside team to ensure coordinated, personal care.
Bryan completed his medical training in the United Kingdom before undertaking two fellowships in vitreoretinal surgery - in Melbourne and Sheffield - and holds fellowships with both the Australian and UK ophthalmology colleges.
His clinical focus includes medical and surgical retina, ocular oncology and complex cataract surgery, supported by an extensive record of published research.
If you've been referred to Bryan, it's usually because a retinal condition has already been identified that needs his specific expertise.
Bryan consults at Lakeside on either Thursday or Friday.
What is Oculoplastic Surgery?
Surgery involving any part of the eyelids and surrounding area, the orbital and tear duct system (lacrimal system) is known as oculoplastic surgery.
Justin is a subspecialist in oculoplastic surgery. This means he is a qualified eye surgeon, or ophthalmologist, who has undertaken further training in surgery and conditions related to the eyelids, orbits and tear ducts.
This can involve many different types of eyelid and facial surgery, ranging from correcting the malposition of lower and upper eyelids, to more involved reconstruction surgeries to improve the function and appearance of the eyes, taking into account the relationships between the eyelids and forehead, temporal and cheek areas. It requires a deep understanding of the delicate anatomy and function of the eyelids and their surrounding facial structures.
The Australian and New Zealand Society Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeons, of which Justin is an active member, is the professional society that helps surgeons maintain an exceptional level of care and treatment for their patients.
